Located in the arid Peruvian coastal plain, some 400 km south of Lima, the geoglyphs of Nazca and the pampas of Jumana cover about 450 km2. These lines, which were scratched on the surface of the ground between 500 B.C. and A.D. 500, are among archaeology’s greatest enigmas because of their quantity, nature, size and continuity. They have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The lines are a series of complex designs, some up to 300 meters long which can only be seen in their true dimension from the sky, from an altitude of at least 1,500 feet. Some of the figures that you will appreciate are the monkey, the spider, the Astronaut, the family and the hummingbird.

It is important to mention that the exact time for the overflight can only be confirmed 1 day before.

The Urubamba Valley or Sacred Valley is a valley in the Andes of Peru, close to the Inca capital of Cusco and below the ancient sacred city of Machu Picchu. It is located in the modern Peruvian region of Cusco. In colonial documents it is referred to as the “Valley of Yucay”, according to recent researches it encompasses the heartland of the Inca Empire. The valley includes everything between Calca and Lamay, Pisac, and Ollantaytambo, it has been formed by the Urubamba River, also known as Vilcanota River or Wilcamayu. The latter in Quechua means the Sacred River. It is fed by numerous rivers which descend through adjoining valleys and gorges, and contains numerous archaeological remains and villages. The valley was appreciated by the Incas due to its special geographical and climatic qualities. It was one of the empire’s main points for the extraction of natural wealth, and one of the most important areas for maize production in Peru northwards from Pisac.

Your guide will take you on a tour to the different Inca Communities and antique salt mines. You will start the tour with a visit to Moray, a Pre-Incan site built with round, agricultural terraces, some of them up to 150m deep. The little Andean community which is famous for its embedded amphitheater. Evidences seem to suggest that Moray was an important Inca agricultural research center. Nearby, you will visit the salt flats near the small village of Maras. Since before Incan times, salt water has been distributed in pans and dried for harvesting, making Maras in Inca times an important trading center. The harvesting is up to this day done by hand and the view of this complex of nearly 3,000 wells is spectacular.

Lunch at a local restaurant is included before you are taken to your hotel to relax.

The hills on its southern and eastern side were used intensively by the Incas and above, they built a religious center with temples and buildings that stand out architecturally. The whole area has a wide range and you will stroll through it, discovering new sites after each curve and having a new perspective onto the Sacred Valley. After the visit of the ruins, you go down to the village and stroll over the market of Pisac well-known amongst inhabitants and tourists. On the bazaar-like open market you can buy a wide variety of Peruvian handicrafts such as: ceramics, alpaca clothes, musical instruments, paintings, antiques, and, most of all, weavings and jewelry. Like on traditional Peruvian markets, bargaining is welcome here!

Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant and watch the elegant Peruvian Paso Horse.

In the afternoon, you continue to Ollantaytambo. The impressive fortress thrones protectively above the village, the sight is great. Ollantaytambo is one of the few scenes where the Spaniards lost a battle against the Incas.

Visit a typical house located in the town of Ollantaytambo, one of the oldest towns in the surroundings of Cusco and very often called the “last living Inca village of Peru”. Experience the unique way of living in the Sacred Valley in a family home owned for generations, located close to the entrance of the Ollantaytambo ruins.

**Remark: The main market days in Pisac are Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. The other days, a smaller market is held.

Machu Picchu – “The lost city of the Incas“ is not only one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, but also the biggest treasure of Perus past and the empire of the Incas. Undiscovered by the Spaniards and forgotten over centuries, it was 1911 that the US-American scientist Hiram Bingham came upon it accidentally. Until today, the ruins leave scientists with numerous questions and riddles on how it was built and for which purpose. Theories vary but one thing is for sure: Machu Picchu is one of the most impressive and exciting places in the world, sublime and majestic on top of the mountain and surrounded by impenetrable rainforest.

Day 09 – Monday, June 17, 2019 Cusco
  • Meals: Buffet breakfast, Dinner
  • City tour and visit of the surrounding ruins of Cusco (4h)
  • Transfer hotel – restaurant – hotel

Cusco – The “Navel of the Earth” is another name for Cusco, since during the height of the Inca civilization nearly all pathways led to this capital of the empire. Today, almost every visitor to Peru eventually comes to this city located 11,150 feet above sea level (3,400 meters) and one of the best places to experience the remainders of different ages. You will not only find Incan walls and temples, but also colonial mansions and catholic churches. In combination with the flair of modern Cusco, it is one of the most fascinating cities in the country.

Today, you will go on a city tour of Cusco which consists of a visit to its most important landmarks of both the Inca and the Colonial times. During your tour you will visit Koricancha, also known as the temple of the sun. A catholic monastery, Santo Domingo, was built on the site, partly including the Incan Walls of the Sun Temple. Continue to the Cathedral, considered the best repository of colonial art from the Cusco school. It was built over the palace of the Inca Wiracocha and considered the religious and political center of Cusco during the Inca era. You will also walk through the Inca Street of Loreto, a fine sample of the old town and its remarkable Inca walls.

Afterwards, you will leave the city to visit the outer parts of Cusco were you can find important ruins of the Inca Empire. Between them the most important is the archaeological park of the fortress-temple Saqsaywaman which shows precise zigzags of massive stone to which centuries could not do any harm. You make your way to the sanctuary of Qenqo, the sentinel of Puca Pucara and the temple of water named Tambomachay before making your way back to the hotel.

Enjoy dinner at a local restaurant right at the main square. After the meal you will be brought back to your hotel in Cusco.

Day 10 – Tuesday, June 18, 2019 Cusco-Puno
  • Meals: Buffet breakfast, Lunch
  • Transfer Cusco – Puno (10h)
  • On the way: Visit of the Andahuaylillas church, Raqchi ruins and Pucara

Today, you will travel from Cusco to Puno. The ride includes stops at interesting sights along the way as well as lunch. Highest point during the drive is La Raya at 4319 m.a.s.l.

On the ride you will visit Andahuaylillas church which is considered to be the “Sistine Chapel” of the Americas, because of the quality of the artworks found inside it. This church must have been built over some important Incan building, possibly a “Waka” (shrine), as bases of the church were made with carved andesite belonging to religious Quechua architecture.

Then, visit Raqchi ruins. These are the best and – to this extent – only surviving ruins that have adobe walls still sitting on a base of Inca rock walls. This was a normal feature in Inca architecture, all tall buildings were built like this, but thanks to the weather, and to the Spanish, little survives today.

On route you will also visit Pucara which is famous for its pottery, especially the well-known “Toritos de Pucara” (Little Bulls of Pucara). Visit the “Museo Litico de Pucara” (Pucara Stone Museum), displaying a good little selection of anthropomorphic monoliths, zoomorphic sculptures, ceramics, and other objects from the Pucara pre-Inca Culture (original and replica pieces). Also its church located in the main square, is worth a visit. Lunch at local restaurant is included.

In Puno you will be brought to your hotel.

Puno was founded in 1668 and has the byname „Capital of Folklore“. The city is situated at the shores of the highest navigable lake of the world, Lake Titicaca. The „ocean of the Andes“ provides warmth and food for many inhabitants of the region, as the lake provides a milder climate for crops and life stock. According to the legend, the Sun God’s children, Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo, emerged from the lake into the world to found the empire of the Incas. The lake remains mystical, full of secrets and leaves a lifelong impression on its visitors.

Overnight at the Casa Andina Premium Puno 4* (superior room)

Day 11 – Wednesday, June 19, 2019 Puno
  • Meals: Buffet breakfast, Lunch
  • Excursion to the Floating Islands of the Uros and Taquile Island (8h)

You will be picked up at the hotel to depart from Puno’s dock towards the Uros Islands. Located within the Titicaca National Reserve, the Uros consist of more than 50 small reed islands that are manmade and floating. They are named after their builders who still live here after centuries, maintaining their traditional way of living. Learn more about their origins that made them who they are today. Afterwards, you continue the journey to the island of Taquile, which is famous for its knitting men. People here wear colorful clothes that are handmade and sold everywhere on the island. There are no streets here, only agricultural terraces and paths through wonderful countryside. With a little luck, you can even see until Bolivia and the Cordillera Real. The highest point of the island is the main village at 4.050 m.o.s.l., which can be visited voluntarily.

A typical lunch at Taquile is included.

The necropolis, which is one of the largest in America and one of the most impressive in the world, lies on an esplanade at 4.000 m (13.123 ft) above sea level in form of a peninsula, bordered by the beautiful lake of Umayo. The Chullpas or Aya Wasis found there are gigantic funerary monuments built by the Collas. These are quadrangular and circular 12 meters buildings in height and the way they were built challenges the laws of balance since they have a smaller diameter in the base than at the top. Outstanding among these are the Chullpa del Lagarto (lizard) and the Inti Watana.

Afterwards, continue to the airport for your flight to Lima.

Arrival in Lima and Transfer to your hotel.  You will be picked up at given time at the hotel and brought to a restaurant in the bohemian neighborhood of Barranco. Here you will enjoy a delicious farewell dinner buffet and a spectacular show of traditional Peruvian dances. Today, visit the temples of the Sun and the Moon, pyramidal temples dating from 1-VIII BC having superimposed platforms and an overall height of more than 45 m (148 ft). The Temple of the Sun was built with more than 140 million adobe bricks. Across from this temple is the Temple of the Moon where archaeologists have recently made important discoveries consisting in polychrome mud wall decorations in high relief. This is significant as it is the first time this type of decoration has been seen in Mochica architecture. The variety and plastic quality of these iconographies show fish, birds and the face of a deity in the ceremonial court of 60 by 30 m.

Continue to the great citadel of Chan Chan, the world’s largest mud city of pre-Columbian America, ancient capital of the pre-Inca Chimu Empire. It covered an area of more than 18 sq. The Tschudi Palace which has very well-preserved friezes and decorations is frequently visited by tourist. Proceed to Huanchaco with its picturesque creek for fishermen, where you will see the famous “Caballitos de Totora”, which are fragile Pre-Inca crafts, made with pressed totora (reed). The Huanchaqueros (fishermen of Huanchaco) use this to fish as the ancient Mochicas.

Afterwards visit the Dragon or Arco Iris Huaca. This is a Chimu pyramidal temple located 5 km to the north of Trujillo. It still has its original walls (11 m / 36 ft high) where one can find friezes showing two-headed snakes and dancing warriors. All of which are very well preserved.
