UPCOMING TOUR (July 2017): THE OLMEC HEAD TOUR

2 June 2016

Greetings Family,

The Olmec civilization is the first civilizations of the Americas. It began four-thousand years ago. What is most important to us is that the Olmec civilization was ruled over by a dynasty, perhaps a series of dynasties, of African kings. What stands out most about the Olmec civilization are seventeen colossal stone heads. Each head is unique and each one has the face of an African man.

Over the past two years I have photographed sixteen of these heads.

This is the front view of the one remaining Olmec head that I have not seen or photographed. It is in an isolated area in the southeastern portion of Vera Cruz state in Mexico. There are seventeen of these fully completed heads and this is the one that has eluded me so far. It is at a place called San Lorenzo Tenochitlan. Not many people get there but in less than two weeks I intend to go and visit and photograph it.

San Lorenzo was the first great Olmec city and was at one time it was the largest city in Mesoamerica. These heads, more than anything else, show the unequaled early prominence of African voyagers to ancient America.

And this is where I am going.

If you would like to make a contribution to the trip it would be most helpful. Just use your Paypal account via Runoko@hotmail.com as the payee. For those that donate, no matter the size of the contribution, my gift to you will be a series of original digital photographs of this wonderful artifact.

In July 2017 I intend to lead a group tour of the Olmec legacy in Mexico. A tour of the Olmec World. On the tour the intention will be to see and photograph all of the heads and view every important Olmec artifact in Mexico. All of the Olmec heads on one tour. It has never been done before but we are going to do it next year. But first, this one. It is going to be an historic tour. But first, this one.

Mexico, here I come!

In love of Africa,

Runoko Rashidi

TERESA

  1. Hotep my good brother. I wanted to get your input on those Mexicans who say we’re stealing their ancestors legacy by stating the Olmecs shared a culture with black Africans. Also, which of the two civilizations is older the Olmec or the Nile
    Valley civilizations?
    Thanks in advance

    Safe travels.

    • Greetings Ishmael Etienne! This is Teresa, one of the site administrators. Dr. Rashidi is unavailable to respond directly at this time, as he is in constant travel. However, one way to pose any question directly to him is through his online courses, which are interactive and have question/answer sessions at various points during the 2 hour lecture. His next one, Fundamentals in African History, is scheduled to start this Friday, June 17th. It will cover a session on the Olmec civilization. For more information, click the Home Page link, then click the Fundamentals in African History post.
