This historical tour led by Dr. Runoko Rashidi will focus on the African Rebellions and Resistance History of South Carolina, The Sea Islands, Richmond, Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C. Topics will include the historical significance of major historical sites as well as the legacy of Gabriel Prosser, Nat Turner, Harriett Tubman and many others.

Day 1: Charleston
Arrival in Charleston. You will take the hotel’s complimentary airport shuttle to your Hotel. Your evening is free for personal pursuits.

Day 2: Charleston/
After breakfast you will depart early at approximately 7:30am for Hilton Head, South Carolina.
9:30 – You will board the Ferry to Daufuskee Island, approximately 1 hour ride to the Gullah Island.
11:00am – The group will be met and will take a two-hour tour of the island.
1:00pm – Lunch at the Daufuskee Crab Shack
The rest of the afternoon will be spent browsing around the shops on the island. Later returning to your hotel. Dinner on your own.

Day 3: Charleston/St. John’s and St. James Island/Stono/Sullivan Island
After breakfast at 9:00am – You will depart the hotel and take a two-hour tour of Charleston visiting sites of rebellions and unrest. You will stop at Emmanuel AME Church, the bedrock of the emancipation of enslaved Africans.
11:00 am – The group will depart to John’s Island for a historical tour.
11:30am – The group will travel to James Island to visit the McLeod Plantation and tour the island. Boxed lunch will be provided by a local African American restaurant.
1:00pm – Departure for Sullivan Island, visit Ft. Moutrie
3:30 pm – Return to hotel, the rest of the day is at leisure.
6:00pm – Option excursion to the nation’s oldest market place. Visitors will have the opportunity to see African American artisans and weavers of the Sweet Grass baskets, only found in Charleston and South Africa. Dinner on your own.

Day 4: Richmond
After breakfast you will depart by 9:00am for Richmond Virginia. Stop along the way for lunch on your own.
6:00pm – Welcome to Richmond, enjoy a welcome dinner at the famous African American restaurant Croaker’s Restaurant.

Day 5: Richmond/South Hampton/Baltimore
9:00am – After Breakfast you will check out of your hotel to start your full day of tours, first stopping at the historical site of Gabriel Prosser.
Your journey will take you to Southampton County for the Nat Turner Trail tour.
10:00am – The Nat Turner Trail Tour will start.
1:00pm – A vegetarian, all natural meal will be prepared in your honor for lunch.
2:00pm – Departure to Baltimore
6:00pm – Upon arrival, you will check into your hotel Dinner is on your own.

Day 6: Baltimore/Harper’s Ferry/Baltimore
9:00am – Departure for Harper’s Ferry
12:00pm – A stop for lunch at an African American restaurant and then continue on your full day tour.
2:00pm – Returning to Baltimore you will visit the Blacks in Wax Museum.
5:00pm – Return to your hotel

Day 7: Baltimore/
After breakfast you will depart for Cambridge, Maryland – approximately 2 hours each way from Baltimore.
After your visit to the Museum and historical sites you will stop for lunch.
Later you will arrive back at your hotel. Your evening is free.

Day 8: National Harbor/Optional Program to Smithsonian
After breakfast you will check out of your hotel and travel to Washington, DC to Anacosta.
12:00pm you will stop at one of the African American eateries for lunch, before continuing on to the Smithsonian African American Museum or a museum of choice.
End of Tour
